How to Address Sensitive Topics in Christian Copywriting

Christian Copywriting

All right friends. Here’s a tough one…

How do we, as Christian entrepreneurs, tackle sensitive topics without compromising our core beliefs?

It can be like tip-toeing on a tightrope between societal norms and our scared doctrines.

When the world is shouting a thousand different viewpoints, how do you make your God-centered message heard without offending or alienating? That’s what we’re unpacking today. Grab your Bible, say a quick prayer, and let’s go…

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." - Psalm 119:105

The Faithful Blueprint: Crafting Some Solid Content

You know how when you’re lost, you turn to maps? Well, for us, that’s the Word.  It’s not just about quoting a verse here and there—it’s like having a flashlight in the dark.

Every time you drop a Bible verse into your piece, you’re giving folks a little “Aha!” moment. You know, making them nod and think, “Yeah, that’s what The Word says!”

And just like Jesus always had relevant scripture to share, we should too.

Want to see an example? Surprise! You already are in THIS blog post. Notice how I purposely included Bible verses I felt were relevant and added to the content following each major topic.

This is done strategically to increase both the readability and impact of what you are reading.

It’s like giving your words a biblical stamp of approval.

Throw in a Dash of Empathy

This is the secret sauce in copywriting success. Especially for faith-based organizations.

Why? Consider the teachings and actions of Jesus. He wasn’t just a messenger; He deeply connected with those around Him, understanding their struggles, joys, and aspirations. His ministry was rooted in genuine empathy.

Incorporating this lesson into your writing is about genuinely understanding your audience.

When drafting content, immerse yourself in the emotions and experiences of your readers.

Ponder questions like: “What challenges are they facing? How might they react to this message?”

The goal? To produce content that doesn’t just inform, but also resonates on a personal level. Your words should extend an emotional hand, creating an atmosphere of understanding and solace.

In essence, every sentence should convey, “I’m here with you, and I understand.”

By intertwining genuine empathy with your writing, you’re not just penning words, but forging connections, building bridges, and fostering a community of understanding and trust.

"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." - Ephesians 4:29

Crafting Words with Precision and Care

Think of words as the finest coffee beans of the language world. Each one has its own flavor, aroma, and impact.

When you select them with care, they can create a symphony for the senses. However, just as one off-note ingredient can spoil a culinary masterpiece, a poorly chosen word can destroy your message.

Seems daunting? Here’s a strategy to guide your word choice…

First, sidestep complex jargon that might alienate your reader. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, be discerning to avoid phrasings that could inadvertently offend and turn OFF your audience.

In our rapidly evolving world, sensitivity is paramount. The aim? Craft content that resonates, that makes your reader feel valued and understood. Nope, it’s NOT easy at all. But what is that’s truly worth while?

Creating faith-based content is like composing powerful hymn. It’s a harmonious blend of timeless scriptures, a dash of genuine empathy, and a judicious selection of words. When you master this mix, you’re doing more than just relaying information.

You’re forging deep connections, touching the very essence of your readers, and reflecting the compassionate teachings of Jesus.

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." - 2 Timothy 3:16

Tackling Those Elephants in the Room

In today’s digital age, we’re constantly bombarded with a deluge of information. That’s why authenticity is paramount. You must speak your truth, voice your beliefs, and ensure your audience understands the foundation of your perspectives.

Turning to scriptures for support? It’s akin to anchoring your standpoint on an unshakeable foundation. You’re essentially stating, “This isn’t mere personal opinion; I’m grounded in the age-old wisdom of the Bible.”

Your faith profoundly shapes your entire worldview. It casts its influence on every facet, including business deliberations.

When scriptures are cited, it’s not about name-dropping verses. It’s a testament to the core values and principles driving your decisions.

Transparency in the integration of faith within business dialogues does more than just provide clarity; it establishes a bond of trust. It signals to your audience that every business move is rooted in principles that have stood the test of time.

"Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed." - Proverbs 15:22

Get Some Solid Advice

Unity and collaboration form the essence of our faith journey. Remember, while personal revelations are powerful, tapping into the collective wisdom of seasoned believers can offer invaluable insights.

Consider approaching your church leader, perhaps a knowledgeable elder, or even that theologian whose writings have often sparked deep reflections. They’ve navigated similar crossroads and can share from a reservoir of experience and understanding.

Not only can they offer a fresh perspective, but their counsel might also help you avoid potential pitfalls or misconceptions.

Engaging in these discussions not only refines your viewpoint but also strengthens bonds within the faith community.

This ensures that when you do share your thoughts, they are well-rounded and deeply rooted in a broader context of understanding.

"Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ." - Ephesians 4:15

Authenticity Over Sensation: Finding the Balance

In an age swamped with clickbait headlines and sensational stories, it might be tempting to go for “OVER THE TOP” rather than disciplined and restrained in your writng.

And while you might grab some attention at first, it probably isn’t the kind you really want. Now, I’m definitely NOT telling you to be dull…

Quite the opposite! Authenticity—conveying the honest truth in your copy—holds its own magnetic pull. It resonates deeply with your target audience in a way that contrived drama simply can’t.

Focus on crafting content that is genuine, heartfelt, and illuminating. These are the types of messages that not only engage but also endure.

People are more likely to return to a source that offers sincere insights rather than exaggerated claims.

The goal is to build a relationship based on trust and shared values, to create a bond that can withstand the constant bombardment of digital distractions. So, instead of aiming to momentarily capture attention, aspire to permanently capture hearts.

That’s where the true power of faith-based copywriting lies.

In a world saturated with noise, be the authentic voice that not only speaks but listens, understands, and connects.

"Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person." - Colossians 4:6

A Little FYI (Disclaimers)

There’s no denying it—some subjects are inherently sensitive, carrying the potential to spark intense reactions.

This is precisely where the judicious use of disclaimers can be pivotal. Think of it as a gentle preface, a way to frame your perspective and set expectations. It’s like saying, “Here’s my stance, and I’m opening the floor for a thoughtful exchange.”

While I’m an advocate for courageous conversations, today’s landscape often necessitates establishing common ground first to foster meaningful and respectful dialogues.

When broaching substantial, potentially contentious topics, the key ingredients are crystal-clear communication, well-informed viewpoints, genuine authenticity, and a transparent statement of intent.

The ultimate goal? To emulate the compassion and discernment of Christ, regardless of the topic’s complexity.

Engaging in spiritual discussions isn’t merely about imparting wisdom. Think about it like a cozy coffee session, inviting individuals to converse, reflect, and grow.

"Test everything; hold fast what is good." - 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Ask Some Real Questions

Don’t we all crave deeper insights and understanding?

Rather than concluding with a definitive statement, consider handing over the spotlight to your readers. Engage them. Let them ponder.

Instead of declaring, “This is what this Bible verse signifies,” why not transition to a more inclusive tone? Pose a query like, “How do you integrate the essence of this verse into your daily life?”

Such questions do more than just stimulate intellectual thought; they encourage introspection. They transform a mere conversation into a shared journey of discovery, promoting a sense of community and personal connection.

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." - Romans 12:2

Creating a Sanctuary in the Digital Wilderness

The digital realm can often feel like uncharted territory, teeming with passionate opinions and, yes, even keyboard warriors. In the midst of this, when discussing matters of faith and soul, it’s paramount to create a sanctuary—a safe space devoid of animosity.

Consider this: Set boundaries, curate the tone, and actively manage the conversation. Ensure that the environment is welcoming, where judgment is set aside and understanding is at the forefront.

By doing so, you’re offering a haven—a serene corner in the vast digital universe. Here, individuals can delve deep into soulful discussions, confident that they’ll be met with respect and an open heart.

This isn’t just a chatroom; it’s a digital congregation of like-minded souls seeking understanding and connection.

"And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony." - Revelation 12:11

Weaving Narratives that Resonate

Stories have a power like no other. They resonate deeply, transcending the barriers of time, age, and culture. And when you integrate real-life testimonials into your content, it not only reinforces your message but also creates an emotional bond with your audience.

Think of it this way: When someone shares how a particular scripture you discussed brought them solace during turbulent times, it’s not just a story—it’s a testament to the transformative power of faith.

These narratives don’t merely validate your approach; they inspire and uplift your entire community. It’s akin to striking a chord that vibrates and echoes, touching souls far and wide.

In essence, initiating a spiritual dialogue can be likened to sowing a seed. With nurturing, genuine interactions, and relatable stories, you’re not merely facilitating a conversation. You’re cultivating a community anchored in shared beliefs, compassion, and positivity.

"Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person." - Colossians 4:5-6
